An Agent Shops Only What It Can Read, and the Unreadable Brand Never Makes the Cart
Agents now research and buy for shoppers, and a standards war over how they pay has redrawn who controls the sale. Brands an agent can read are the ones that make the shortlist.

If this caught your attention, that’s not accidental.
The best editorial systems don’t happen by accident. Outlever builds them.

What used to take a folder of open tabs now takes a single question to an agent. Visa, Mastercard, and AI platforms are racing to control how that agent completes the purchase. Nothing makes agentic marketing more concrete than a sale. The brands that sit it out never make the agent's shortlist. Once the first reader of a product page is a machine, the rules of being found change.
A protocol war broke out in under a year
A cluster of commerce standards landed in quick succession: OpenAI and Stripe's Agentic Commerce Protocol, Google's Agent Payments Protocol, Visa's Trusted Agent Protocol, and Mastercard's Agent Pay. Each one defines how an agent reads a product feed, proves who it is, and completes a payment. Support more than one and the agent traffic follows. Support none and a competitor collects it.
The category moves fast enough that the early leader already changed course. After launching Instant Checkout in 2025, OpenAI pulled back from it in March 2026 and shifted to a model where the agent handles discovery and recommendation while the shopper finishes the purchase on the merchant's own site. The settlement taking shape across the industry hands AI the discovery and keeps checkout with the merchant.
The behavior shift is already in the numbers
The numbers are already in. Shoppers who reached US retail sites from AI services over the 2025 holiday season converted 31 percent higher than those from other channels, with revenue per visit up 254 percent year over year. Traffic from AI sources climbed 693 percent over the same period. The conversion gap is what earns a marketer's attention. An agent does the comparing upstream, so the shopper lands ready to check out.
What a marketer actually does about it
If an agent can't read a brand's feeds, schema, and pricing, that brand effectively doesn't exist. Stripe, which co-built the protocol with OpenAI, puts this in the same lineage as the shift from desktop to mobile, another wave that changed how customers reach checkout.
So the work shifts. Structured feeds, schema markup, and clean real-time pricing are the table an agent reads from, and supporting at least one of the major protocols is the entry fee. The brands preparing now treat machine readability as a channel with its own budget and owner, run with the same agentic discipline they apply to search and ads. The buyer is becoming an agent. The open question is whether a brand's products are legible to it, or whether the brand finds out it was invisible only after the quarter closes.
