Zero-Click Search Hit 68%. The Brands Cited Inside the Answer Are the Ones Still Reaching Customers.

A page can rank first and still pull zero traffic, because the AI resolves the query before anyone leaves the results. The brands built into the summary keep reaching customers.

For as long as there has been search, a high ranking meant more traffic. That promise just broke, and the scramble to replace it is on. Search works differently now. Google's AI answers the query, the user gets what they came for, and the site never enters the picture. A ranking can be perfect and the traffic can still be zero.

The data on the break

AI Overviews now appear on close to half of Google searches, and when one shows up, organic click-through drops by roughly 61 percent. More than 68 percent of US Google searches now end without a single click to any website, up from about 60 percent two years ago. Google kept the rankings and took the clicks.

The clearest proof that the answer itself is taking the click comes from a controlled experiment that stripped AI Overviews out of real users' results. Outbound clicks jumped 38 percent. Satisfaction held steady. The answer was doing the job the click used to do.

Why ranking stopped predicting visibility

The statistic that should reorder every SEO team's priorities is about overlap. The share of AI Overview citations that also rank in the top ten organic results collapsed from about 75 percent in mid-2025 to somewhere between 17 and 38 percent by early 2026. Part of that drop reflects better measurement of citations that were always there, but the drop is real either way. A page can rank first and go uncited, which means position and visibility have come apart as measures.

The pattern shows up across whole client rosters. An agency tracking around 70 sites found its most information-heavy clients down roughly 44 percent in a year, with rankings holding steady the whole way down. Google referral traffic to publishers fell by roughly a third over the past year.

The one number that points the way out

There is a consolation buried in the same data. Traffic that does arrive from AI sources converts several times better than standard organic, because those visitors arrive further along in the decision. There may be fewer clicks, but they're better ones.

The work now is getting cited inside the answer, not ranked beneath it, and that's a different game. Most dashboards still measure a funnel that changed shape, which is why so many teams are blindsided by a decline their ranking reports never showed. The brands closing the gap lean on platforms built to win AI citations rather than chase positions that no longer pay. Mistaking a ranking for reach, a brand fades out with every report still showing green.
